Red Sox fire front office chief Dombrowski

The Boston Red Sox fired president Dave Dombrowski on Sunday. The team plans to elevate assistant general manager Eddie Romero to lead its baseball-operations department, sources told ESPN.

Dombrowski, 63, was the architect behind their 2018 World Series championship and had a contract that ran through the 2020 season. The Red Sox are in the midst of a disappointing season that has them eight games back of the second wild-card spot in the American League and 17½ games behind the first-place New York Yankees in the AL East.

Romero will become the first general manager born in Puerto Rico and the second current head of baseball operations of Latin American descent, joining Detroit Tigers general manager Al Avila.
