Last week Beijing-based MMA coach and amateur fighter Xu Xiaodong made headlines for his involvement in another MMA vs. traditional martial arts fight. That ‘contest’, which took place in Karamay, Xinjiang, saw Xu blast through a wizened wing chun practitioner named Lu Gang.
According to Nicolas Atkin of South China Morning Post Xu had to use the name Xu Dong Gua (which means Winter Melon) and wear clown make-up to fight Lu, under threat that organizers would pull the live-stream of the event if he declined. The name Winter Melon was meant as a jibe against Xu’s physique.
