Jake Matthews appeared to have a victory in his grasp at UFC Perth — that is, until he didn’t.
The Australian had opponent Neil Magny trapped in a mounted guillotine choke late in the opening stanza of their welterweight encounter. Apparently thinking that Magny had gone unconscious, referee Steve Perdios intervened a few seconds before the end of the period to wave off the fight. When Magny vehemently protested the stoppage, Perdios allowed the bout to continue into the second round. Eventually, Magny rallied to submit Matthews with a brabo choke at the 3:08 mark of Round 3 for a controversial triumph.
