Kyle Nelson had to fight for about 10 minutes longer than he might have expected following a controversial ending to the opening round of his lightweight clash with Matt Frevola at UFC Vancouver.
Nelson had his opponent reeling toward the end of the opening stanza, and as he unleashed a barrage of ground-and-pound, referee Dan Miragliotta appeared to step in to stop the contest with approximately three seconds remaining. As it turned out, the veteran official wasn’t waving off the bout — he simply thought the round had ended. As a result, the fight eventually made it to the judges scorecards, with Nelson earning a unanimous decision triumph.
