The boxing world experienced a massive shake-up on Saturday night, as the unheralded heavyweight Andy Ruiz Jr (33-1, 22 KOs) came in on short notice and scored a stunning seventh-round TKO of England’s Anthony Joshua (22-1, 21 KOs) in front of a pro-Joshua crowd at Madison Square Garden in New York. It was billed as Joshua’s United States debut and a chance for American audiences to witness his greatness in primetime, but the night belonged to Ruiz, an 11-to-1 underdog who’d never picked up a top-ten win prior to Saturday, and has since become the WBO-WBA-IBF heavyweight champion of the world.
