After a near-successful CONCACAF Gold Cup in which the U.S. Men’s National Team fell at the final hurdle, their great rivals Mexico getting the better of them in the final with a 1-0 victory, Gregg Berhalter and his players return to international duty this September with two friendlies against Mexico and Uruguay.
This week, Berhalter announced his 26-man roster for these September friendlies, with some big-name players missing out.
So, here are three immediate takeaways from Berhalter’s thinking.

In Berhalter’s 4-3-3 system that was used throughout the summer and in the build-up to the Gold Cup, Christian Pulisic was both listed and utilised as a central midfielder, the tip of a central midfield trio, Berhalter clearly wanting to build the team around his most talented and impactful individual.
