USMNT: 3 immediate takeaways from final Gold Cup roster

The Gold Cup is a matter of days away. After an extended build-up which culminated in Wednesday night’s friendly loss to Jamaica, a defeat that puts the U.S. Men’s National Team on the backfoot from the off, Gregg Berhalter revealed his final 23-man roster.

The announcement had a couple of shocks and perhaps included a more MLS-weighted squad than some had expected, but it now sets up the USMNT for their first competitive tournament under Berhalter’s guidance.

3. The Berhalter system is a go

From the off, Gregg Berhalter wanted to use a 4-2-3-1-type formation with a hybrid right-back who moved into the midfield when the USMNT had safe possession but played in a traditional right-back role when in the defensive shape.
