On Friday the Seattle Reign announced they had waived defender Paige Nielsen ahead the match against the Boston Breakers on July 2nd. Paige was the 25th draft pick in the 2016 NWSL draft, and signed by the Reign back in May.
No official information was given on the club’s move. However, with two recent international signings the Seattle Reign were likely up against NWSL roster size limits. On the surface this looks like a very odd move from the front office given a number of factors:
- Injuries: Megan Rapinoe is still listed as an active squad member, even though she has been injured the entire season (not on the DL) and will likely stay out during the Olympic break.
