The Effects Of The Unwritten Rules

In any other workplace, Jonathan Papelbon would have committed assault. But in Major League Baseball, the unwritten rules have willed it.

Baseball is a weird sport. It is quite possibly the greatest sport, but man, it is weird. For starters, it can literally go on forever — the longest game ever played was a 25-inning marathon that lasted eight hours and six minutes. Teams do not score points, they score runs, and don’t you dare call them points at a live ball game.

But perhaps the weirdest of the weird are the unwritten rules of baseball.
