MLB Trade Rumors: Mariners Interested In Sonny Gray, Tigers Shopping Verlander And More

The MLB Trade Deadline of July 31st is just a week away, and as a result, trade rumors are flying across the league as talks heat up. The market around pitchers like Yu Darvish and Sonny Gray continue to be the main storyline as we get ready for what is sure to be a hectic week. Here are all the latest MLB trade rumors you need to know from the hot stove.

Mariners Interested In Sonny Gray
There might be a new team in the mix for Oakland Athletics' starter Sonny Gray. Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports that the Seattle Mariners are thinking about making a run at Gray.

A source with knowledge of the team's thinking suggested that Mariners general manager Jerry Dipoto might be preparing to make a run for the A's right-hander, who stands as one of the controllable jewels of this year's non-waiver Trade Deadline.

He is going for it these next two years," the source said, noting that although Seattle's system is somewhat depleted, Dipoto has shown a willingness to make big moves. "If he is going for it, he might as well go completely in."

Dipoto has been a willing wheeler-and-dealer, but that limited farm system could be a serious issue. Top prospect Kyle Lewis would surely have to be included in a trade and even then, the Mariners are competing against better stocked farm systems like the Yankees and Astros. Gray has a 6-4 record with a 3.66 ERA and a 1.176 WHIP. Pair that with a lackluster starting pitching market and Gray being under team control for two years after this one, it's easy to see why the demand and asking price is so high.

Tigers Shopping Verlander
Gray isn't the only pitcher on the market. Former AL Cy Young winner Justin Verlander is also being heavily shopped by the Tigers, per Feinsand. Despite being due $28 million each of the next two years, plus the rest of this year's money, one GM told Feinsand he expects Verlander to be dealt before the trade deadline. So far, the Tigers aren't willing to eat much of Verlander's contract. He's posted a 5-7 record with a 4.45 ERA and a 1.47 WHIP.

Dodgers And Yu Darvish
The Dodgers will be without starting pitcher Clayton Kershaw for 6-to-8 weeks, which means they might increase their efforts to land a starting pitcher. One player they already have interest in is Yu Darvish. MLB.com's Jon Morosi reports the Dodgers view Darvish as an ideal fit for their rotation and had strong interest before Kershaw was hurt again.

"The Dodgers scouted Darvish's most recent start, Friday against the Rays, and possess the farm system necessary to make a compelling offer," Morosi writes. "Sources say the Rangers are likely to ask the Dodgers for at least two of the following prospects: right-hander Walker Buehler, center fielder Alex Verdugo, second baseman Willie Calhoun and right-hander Yadier Alvarez.
Among that group, the Dodgers are most reluctant to part with Buehler, sources say."

Teams like the Cubs, Astros and Yankees also checked out Darvish's last start. He is in the final year of his contract, with a 6-8 record, 3.44 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP.
