MLB Rumors Roundup: Yankees Targeting Gerrit Cole, Mets May Promote Tim Tebow & More

The MLB season is roughly a month and a half old, and there are already rumors flying about a few big names who could be dealt before the trade deadline. The Hot Stove is always on and several teams have already emerged as buyers and sellers. Here are all the latest MLB rumors you need to know.

Yankees looking to trade for Gerrit Cole?
The New York Yankees have been linked to Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Gerrit Cole for a while now, and Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports reports Cole will likely hit the trade block this summer - and the Yankees are expected to pounce.

Rivals believe Gerrit Cole could hit the trade market. The Yankees have always loved him so they'd make sense. New York drafted him out of high school as a late first rounder, but Cole's father told them then that there was no offer that could keep him away from UCLA.

Cole is 1-4 with a 3.06 ERA and 47 strikeouts in eight starts this season.

Mets may promote Tim Tebow within minor leagues
Twitter certainly takes notice every time Tim Tebow hits a home run for the New York Mets Single-A affiliate, the Columbia Fireflies, and it appears the club is taking notice as well. According to Mike Puma of the New York Post, the Mets are considering promoting Tebow to a higher level in the minors.

Tim Tebow’s recent surge at Single-A Columbia — he has a .849 OPS over his last 16 games — hasn’t gone unnoticed by team officials.

According to a club source, there has been discussion about moving the former Heisman Trophy winner to a higher level within the minors, but such a jump likely won’t occur until after the All-Star Game in midseason.

Tebow has a .250/.330/.370 line with two home runs and 11 RBIs in 28 games this season.

Astros looking to make trades, won't rush it
The Houston Astros acknowledged that they will try to acquire a pitcher prior to the trade deadline, but the team is in no rush to do so, according to Brian McTaggart of MLB.com.

The Astros, who lost Collin McHugh to an elbow injury at the start of the season, figure to be one of the teams in the market to add an arm over the next 2 1/2 months, but general manager Jeff Luhnow said Thursday the team will be in no rush, especially considering how well the club is playing right now.

"We jumped on [Scott] Kazmir two years ago early in the trade season, and there's pros and cons to that," Luhnow said. "We got a really good month of some good starts in July that year prior to the Deadline, but other pitchers came available -- namely, David Price -- that had not really been available early, and so if you really want to know what the landscape looks like completely, you kind of have to wait until the end.

"Like I said, we're going to be active in conversations so we know who's available and when they might be traded, but I don't feel like we're going to be in any hurry, especially since we've gotten off to a good start. As long as we continue to play well, there's no urgency to solve a problem right now."

Houston is currently 24-11 on the season and in first place in the AL West. They have a seven-game lead over second place Seattle.
