Everything You Need To Know About MLB No-Hitters

With the Los Angeles Dodgers' Clayton Kershaw throwing the first no-hitter of his young career on Wednesday night, Chat Sports has decided to break out the history books in honor of this historic occasion.

Kershaw tied one record and extended another with his brilliant performance - matching Warren Spahn's record (9/16/60) for most K's in a no-hitter by a lefty with 15 and giving the Dodgers an unmatched 22 no-hitters in their franchise's history.

Here's some more amazing facts about no-hitters, courtesy of information obtained from Baseball-Almanac.com:

Most no-hitters by a single pitcher: Nolan Ryan (7)

Most no-hitters caught by a single catcher: Jason Varitek  (4)

Most consecutive batters retired by a pitcher: Mark Buehrle (45)

Most no-hitters in a season: Five tied with 2 (Johnny Vander Meer [1938], Allie Reynolds [1951], Virgil Trucks [1952], Nolan Ryan [1973], Roy Halladay [2010])

Most no-hitters broken up in the 7th inning or later: Nolan Ryan (24)

Other amazing facts:

  • Johnny Vander Meer threw his first career no-hitter on June 11th, 1938. He proceeded to throw his second and last no hitter in his next start on June 15th, 1938 - marking the only time in MLB history that a pitcher has thrown consecutive no-hitters.
  •  

  • The Philadelphia Phillies hold the NL and MLB record for the longest all-time franchise drought between no-hitters. Johnny Lush threw a no-hitter for the Fightin' Phils on May 1st, 1906, with the next no-no for the franchise coming on June 21, 1964 by Jim Bunning - a span of 58 years and 51 days.
