Powell stays ahead in Mizzou backup QB race

COLUMBIA, Mo. — For a while Monday, Missouri’s offense was in the hands of sophomore quarterback Taylor Powell. That’s not what the Tigers planned for the 2019 season, but Mizzou fans don’t need reminders what injuries can do to the best-laid plans.

They could exhale Wednesday when starting quarterback Kelly Bryant was back on the field after hurting his hamstring Monday. He took back his spot with the No. 1 offense while Powell went back to working with the No. 2 unit.

The Tigers might never need their backup quarterback to take a meaningful snap this season, but if they learned anything Monday, they’ll need one ready at any given moment.
