Mizzou's Manuel a leader long before he was a captain

COLUMBIA, Mo. — When Eli Drinkwitz called Martez Manuel into his office last week, Manuel got scared.

And then he got even more nervous when one of last year’s captains, offensive lineman Case Cook, was already in the room when he walked in.

But as quarterback Connor Bazelak entered moments later, Manuel put two-and-two together and realized he was being named a captain of the Missouri football team, a longtime dream of the Columbia native.

“I was just really honored that my teammates thought that much of me,” Manuel said. “I don’t want to let them down in any way.
