Hochman: Porter Sr. says NBA would be great for sons, but his goal is they follow Golden Rule

COLUMBIA, Mo. • He one day could become basketball’s Archie Manning.

For now, anyway, he’s an anti-LaVar Ball, a thoughtful sports dad who stays out of the spotlight.

Even so, Michael Porter Sr. changed the course of Mizzou basketball history. When he agreed to be a Cuonzo Martin assistant coach, his star sons — Michael Jr. and Jontay — soon joined the Tigers, too.

Michael Jr., then the No. 1 freshman recruit in the nation, inspired the transfer of center Jeremiah Tilmon to Mizzou. Now the Tigers are in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2013.
