Gordo: Odom trying to beat long odds in ultra-competitive SEC

To appreciate the intense pressure faced by Southeastern Conference football coaches, consider how few of them have been on the job longer than Missouri’s Barry Odom.

There is Nick Saban, of course, lording over the conference from his Alabama empire. There’s Gus Malzahn at Auburn, Mark Stoops at Kentucky and Derek Mason at Vanderbilt.

The SEC averaged two coaching changes a year between 2012, Missouri’s first SEC season, and 2017. After that season, five schools hired new coaches and Ole Miss removed Matt Luke’s interim tag.

No conference teams changed coaches ahead of this season — the first time that happened since 2006 — but turnover is almost certain after this campaign.
