Think twice before attempting to rescue an owlet this season, says zoo's veterinarian

With spring around the corner, flowers ready to bloom and eggs about to hatch, zoo officials are asking people to think twice before approaching owlets.

Dickerson Park Zoo’s Dr. Stephanie Zec said baby owls don’t often need any help.

“They kind of do look helpless, right?” Zec said in a phone interview Wednesday. “They’re these little fluff balls with big eyes and you see them on the ground, and they look like your kid’s stuffed animal.”

Despite looking like an animal that won’t “survive the wilds of nature,” Zec said that is just not the case.
