State track and field rundown: Springfield runner repeats as state champ, twice

Springfield’s Claire Workman is a three-time state track and field champion, two times over.

The junior runner for New Covenant Academy won gold in the 800-meter run and the 1,600-meter run on the first day of the 2016 state championship track and field meet Friday in Jefferson City. She also won both races as a freshman and a sophomore, making the junior a three-time reining and defending state champion in both races.

Workman goes to school at Summit Prep, but competes for New Covenant in track and field through a cooperative agreement between the schools.

Workman will try to add two more gold medals Saturday in Jefferson City, and add to her multi-year streak of dominance on the final day of the state meet.
