It’s just their second year to have a baseball team, but the New Covenant Academy Warriors are playing for what could be their first state championship.

New Covenant (23-4) defeated Northwest Livingston County (Hughesville) 5-0 Tuesday afternoon at CarShield Field in O’Fallon in the Class 1 playoff semifinals. New Covenant will face Bell City (23-3), 5-4 winners over Silex in Tuesday’s other semifinal game, at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at CarShield Field.

The Warriors battery fueled the win.

Junior catcher C.J. Fernelius went 4-for-4 at the plate with two RBI, a double and one run scored.

The pitcher that coach John Hartley calls “the Minnesota Moose,” Cody Malan pitched a complete game and picked up the victory for the Warriors.
