Halloween is just the start of folks adorning front porches with what's referred to as "organic décor."
Using items like hay bales, gourds, cornstalks and pumpkins — homes and businesses are decorated with a slew of spooky looks before giving way to the greenery of wreaths and Christmas trees in the coming weeks.
All of these organic items can and should be recycled, urged officials with Springfield's Yardwaste Recycling Center.
Market Development Coordinator Ashley Krug explained that the landfill for this region used to see an average of 800 tons of waste per day with 1,500 tons the week of Christmas about two years ago.
