Payne's Valley: Tiger Woods pays tribute to Ozarks legend Payne Stewart with new course

RIDGEDALE — At Pinehurst Resort in the summer of 1999, Tiger Woods heard the roars of the crowd from behind him as he put together a little bit of a run.

He was trying to get up in a position to take the lead but it wasn't quite enough. One of the most unforgettable duels in U.S. Open history was taking place between Payne Stewart and Phil Mickelson.

Woods stood outside the green and saw that he was going to finish at least one shot behind Mickelson. Stewart had a chance at his second U.S. Open title if he were to make a 18-foot par putt on the 72nd hole.
