JOPLIN — In a story that even Hollywood wouldn't believe, Cross Kubik was on the mound for Kickapoo with a district championship on the line.
Just a year ago, the senior pitcher weighed around 150 pounds and was just a few months removed from chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant while defying the odds cancer presented him for the second time in his life.
On Thursday night, Kubik went six innings and got the win to lead the Chiefs to a 5-3 win over Nixa for the Class 6, District 6 championship in Joplin.
"It's amazing," Kubik said.
