Jerry Armstrong, former Mansfield coach and member of iconic '66 Texas Western team, dies

Jerry Armstrong, a former Mansfield High coach and member of the iconic 1966 Texas Western Miners national championship men's basketball team, died Thursday morning at 76.

He had been receiving transfer treatment and died in his home. He had been living in Mountain Grove, with his wife Mary. He has two children and four grandchildren.

Armstrong is a member of the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame, having compiled a 329-195 record in 21 years as head coach at four different Missouri high schools — Trenton, King City, Richmond and Mansfield — before retiring in 1996. He coached a King City team that reached the state semifinals in 1987 and finished third.
