As Miller football season came to an end in 2016, then-head coach Jason Smith began taking name plates off lockers in the locker room, so they didn't get lost.
While doing so, Smith noticed hand-written notes of encouragement on nameplates of each player.
The coach choked up, overcome by the kindness of Jordan Berns, the senior lineman who did everything he could to inspire his teammates.
That's just the type of guy 'Bernsy' was, Smith said
Berns, 19, died late Sunday night in a single-vehicle crash a few miles west of Halltown in Lawrence County.
