Bears losing, fans leaving: Athletics budget has reached a tipping point

The clock is ticking for Missouri State athletics.

Director of Athletics Kyle Moats has two years to erase an unexpected $1.1 million shortfall. Much of the loss in revenue can be attributed to a steady decline in men's basketball ticket sales.

“It’s the No. 1 thing that we’ve got to get righted,” Moats said. “There’s not anybody in our department that doesn’t understand that."

The $1.1 million was covered by the university’s general fund, which paid $9.8 million to subsidize athletics instead of the $8.7 million that it budgeted.

No one is saying it’s a crisis, but the urgency is clear.
