Songbirds are dying in several states, and wildlife experts don't know why.
At least nine states and the District of Columbia have had several reports of unexplained sick and dead songbirds, according to a news release from Missouri Department of Conservation. Wildlife officials in states such as Kentucky, Indiana, Maryland, and Virginia have reported hundreds of dead birds.
As of now, avian and wildlife health experts with MDC have not received similar reports for Missouri's wild birds.
“Though we have not observed the mysterious bird illness in Missouri, we remain on the lookout for any unusual reports,” said Jasmine Batten, MDC Wildlife Health Program supervisor.
