Quoting sources, Yahoo Sports reported Friday afternoon that the NCAA enforcement staff is “alleging roughly 30 violations in football, women’s basketball and track and field.” The story provided no breakdown of the violations by sports, and the NCAA routinely does not comment on investigations.
The Yahoo story said part of the investigation predates football coach Hugh Freeze’s arrival at the school. The story also said “multiple SEC coaches and administrators have voiced concerns about Ole Miss to the conference office” about the Rebels’ recruiting practices.
Reports of NCAA violations obviously never are good. But the timing of this — less than a week before National Signing Day and on the start of a huge recruiting weekend for Ole Miss — is incredibly bad.
