The University of Mississippi, known by its nickname “Ole Miss,” has recently had a hard time finding an on-field mascot.
“Colonel Reb” was retired following the 2003 season after serving as the mascot for twenty-four years. The school would go without a “children-picture-taking-costume” until a black bear was adopted.
Let’s just say “Rebel the Bear” didn’t work out. Serving only six seasons, Rebel was limited to a select few events due to the controversial nature of the previous mascot’s departure.
As of 2017, with the bear gone, the school will soon welcome a “Landshark” to the sideline.
