Vikings’ surprise QB signing already looks smarter than anyone thought

Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell made it clear the No. 2 quarterback spot was up for grabs heading into the preseason finale, and while Sam Howell sat out, undrafted rookie Max Brosmer made his case to win the job.

Still, a veteran was needed behind J.J. McCarthy as Howell and Brett Rypien showed themselves as less than ideal options. So with only a few days before Tuesday's deadline to be down to 53 players, the news about a pivot came fast on Sunday.

In parallel with reports that Howell was being traded to the Philadelphia Eagles, reports came that the Vikings had agreed to terms with Carson Wentz.
