Before devoting my time toward Vikings writing, I studied poetry. Yes, it was a love of prosody that helped me land a gig covering Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, Kevin O’Connell, and the rest of the gang in Minnesota.
One of the best professors I had while in university advised me to be sensitive to how a poet deploys their diction (a fancy word for, well, words). Oftentimes, the poet will train us how to understand certain words. The basic idea was that words aren’t static. On the contrary, they’re constantly shifting, moving around and acquiring new meanings depending on context, repetition, and a variety of other factors.
