Mitch Leidner of Minnesota Golden Gophers has foot surgery, out 4 months

MINNEAPOLIS -- Minnesota quarterback Mitch Leidner has undergone surgery on his left foot, requiring a four-month recovery that will limit him in spring practices.

The university announced Wednesday that Leidner's procedure went as planned.

Leidner did not miss any games this year. He passed for 2,701 yards, the fourth-most in a season in Gophers history, and became the second quarterback in the program to notch at least 250 yards in four straight games.

The Gophers also announced Wednesday that running back Berkley Edwards, wide receiver Desmond Gant and cornerback Craig James, have been granted their release from the program.
