Minnesota Football: Recruiting in the 1930s #TBT

Related Topics: Stan Kostka, Minnesota

Recruiting was much different in the 1930s. Last week’s post dealt with how players such as Stan Kostka was recruited by a group called the "Hook Em Cow Club" of South St. Paul. So I won’t get into that again. The two other big factors in recruiting then were location and jobs.

Location for example, the vast majority of players on the National Championship teams in the 1930s were from the state of Minnesota. In 1934 30 of 37 players were born in the state, 31 of 35 in 1935, 41 of 46 in 1936, 55 of 59 in 1937, 57 of 63 in 1938.
