Minnesota punter Peter Mortell had a strong final season with the Gophers, averaging 43.1 yards per punt. He had 20 kicks that traveled at least 50 yards and only two touchbacks. Mortell finished third in all-conference voting among coaches and media behind Nebraska punter Sam Foltz and Ohio State's Cameron Johnston. But Mortell decided he wasn't leaving Minneapolis without a little bit of hardware, so he invented the holder of the year award.
