Gophers hockey: Penn State beats UMN in overtime

The Gophers hockey team put a season-high 42 shots on goal but lost 3-2 to Penn State on Friday night at University Park, Pa., as the Nittany Lions' Vince Pedrie scored at 3:47 of overtime.

Brent Gates Jr. scored twice in the third period for Minnesota, and Eric Schierhorn set a career high for saves with 36.

Minnesota (8-10-0 overall, 3-2-0-0 Big Ten) also got two assists from Vinni Lettieri, and another by Leon Bristedt's moved the sophomore into a tie for the team lead with 17 points this season.

After a scoreless first period, Penn State (13-3-3, 3-0-0-0) struck twice early in the second period.
