In their fifth practice of fall camp, Gophers football players wore full pads for the first time Tuesday. But there were no "live" segments where they tackle to the ground, and there won't be many going forward.
Defensive coordinator Tracy Claeys said the Gophers would only have two or three practices involving full contact before the Sept. 3 season opener against second-ranked Texas Christian at TCF Bank Stadium.
"We spend a lot of time showing tackling fundamentals; we just aren't beating the hell out of each other and taking them to the ground," Claeys said. "We're working on getting kids in position to make the plays.
