The Big Ten has finally become an elite conference. And it’s not because it had three teams in the Frozen Four — it’s because those teams used strong defenses and goaltending to reach the national stage instead of just taking occasional advantage of a weak year in college hockey.
“It's starting to become the league that everybody sort of envisioned when they formed the Big Ten being a super conference,” Michigan head coach Mel Pearson said. “I was looking through our schedule and you see Notre Dame, a Frozen Four team, Ohio State, Penn State was in the tournament, Minnesota just missed out.
