Brewers decide against contract for infielder Elian Herrera

The Milwaukee Brewers, who have bounced utility infielder Elian Herrera on and off the 40-man roster several times over the last two years, bounced him off again Wednesday.

Before the deadline for tendering players contracts for 2016 or allowing them to become free agents, the Brewers chose the latter for Herrera, 30, who played in 83 games for them last season while going up and down from Class AAA Colorado Springs.

Herrera was the only player non-tendered by the Brewers, leaving them with 37 players on their 40-man roster. General manager David Stearns said he hoped to keep the versatile switch-hitter in the organization on a minor-league deal.
