Former Middlesbrough captain Stuart Boam has died aged 77 after a lengthy illness.

The former Boro defender made more than 320 appearances for the Teeside club.

In the 1973-74 season - his first as captain at the club - he achieved the second division title.

Despite spending most his life at the rear of the pitch, the Nottingham-born defender scored 14 goals for Boro.

Boam began his career at Mansfield Town before returning in 1981 as a player-manager.

In a statement, Middlesbrough FC said: "A centre-back by trade, Stuart's brave defending and work rate earned him a place in the starting line-up right off the bat from signing for Middlesbrough.
