Western Michigan Softball Knocks off #19 BYU

TEMPE, Ariz.- Junior pitcher Jordan Kurth struck out a career-high 10 batters, leading Western Michigan softball to a 2-1 season-opening win over No. 19 ranked BYU Thursday at the Kajikawa Classic. Freshman Samantha Coffel delivered the game-winning hit with a two-out, two-run single in the top of the fifth.

Kurth surrendered just four hits in the complete-game effort. BYU's lone run was unearned in the bottom of the sixth. Her 10 strikeouts were the most by a Bronco since Allyson Kus fanned 14 batters in 8.2 innings at Ball State on April 29, 2016.

Kurth recorded a strikeout in every inning and punched out two in the first, second and seventh innings.
