In the second quarter of Michigan football’s win over Maryland, quarterback J.J. McCarthy transformed into the human equivalent of a joystick.
After receiving a shotgun snap on third-and-7 from his own 31-yard line with the Wolverines trailing by a field goal, whoever was at the controls went berserk. McCarthy moved toward the middle of the field by sliding to his right; then he stepped up in the pocket; then he veered to his left; then he dropped deeper to avoid defenders; then he cut to his right again ... then he looped up the right sideline and — rather than going out of bounds after picking up the first down — made one more detour to his left where two defenders clobbered him.
