U-M's De'Veon Smith looking to 'catch somebody’s eye' at NFL combine

INDIANAPOLIS – De’Veon Smith came to the NFL scouting combine looking to prove he belongs, a familiar feeling.

At Michigan, he was the less heralded tailback in his class, ranked well behind Derrick Green. Yet he beat out Green, starting for his final 2½ years.

He never had a 1,000-yard rushing season at Michigan, but there was enough appeal to get invited to the East-West Shrine Game, where he impressed enough to be invited to the Senior Bowl.

Now on the stage with the highest-rated running backs -- Leonard Fournette, Dalvin Cook and Christian McCaffrey -- he’s looking to surprise again.
