Throwing Down on Thanksgiving (1885-1905)

You probably know that Michigan used play season-ending games on Thanksgiving day. In fact in the early days of the program it was actually a regular deal, with the work primarily performed in Chicago.

There were a few historically huge ones including the 1898 tilt against Amos Alonzo Stagg’s Chicago Maroons. That game is the subject of Saturday’s edition of ‘This Week in Michigan Football History‘ and inspired the writing of ‘The Victors.’

Until today I never bothered to tally up all the Thanksgiving games – each played on the last Thursday in November, and I’m not sure anyone else has either.
