Smith grabs clear lead among Michigan running backs

Ann Arbor — Michigan tailback De’Veon Smith is entering his final season planning to finish his career with a flourish, and he apparently has the edge sitting atop the spring practice depth chart.

He will be challenged, of course, the rest of this spring and in preseason camp by Drake Johnson and Ty Isaac and, perhaps, a few of the freshmen, but as it stands now, Smith is setting the standard this spring.

“It is his job to lose at this stage,” Michigan running backs coach Tyrone Wheatley said Thursday after practice. “He was focused last year, but now he understands what to focus on.
