Second-ranked UM defense playing at 'extremely high level'

On the strength of a second straight shutout, Michigan entered the coaches' poll at No. 21 on Sunday.

Michigan won at Maryland, 28-0, in the Big Ten opener Saturday.

The Wolverines entered the week one spot out of the coaches' poll while ranked No. 22 in the AP poll. (The new AP poll will be released later Sunday.)

The Wolverines' defense clearly has been the difference. It ranks No. 2 overall nationally, yielding an average 184 yards a game, second in scoring defense (7.6 points per game) and first in third-down percentage defense.

Of 16 Maryland possessions, 12 resulted in three-and-outs, and that includes getting the ball on three turnovers, twice in Michigan territory.
