Michigan football: Five position battles to watch (whenever they get back on the field)

This was supposed to be a pivotal spring for Michigan football.

Coming off a 9-4 season, it had plenty of starting positions to fill. Spring practices would have gone a long way toward determining who held an advantage in those open spots.

Instead, Michigan — like every college football team in the country — is in waiting mode, as all football activities have been shut down due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Here are five position battles that would have taken place this month:

Quarterback

The Wolverines graduated Shea Patterson, who was 19-7 in two seasons as the starter.
