Loss of Detroit-area sports events due to coronavirus may have $10 million impact

The Frozen Four, college hockey’s biggest show that was scheduled for April 9-11 at Little Caesars Arena, has been put on ice.

Go ahead and stick a sword in the NCAA men’s and women’s fencing championships set to take place at TCF Center on March 19-22.

The NCAA women’s bowling championships that were going to get rolling at Thunderbowl Lanes on April 10-11 in Allen Park?

They’re in the gutter, too.

In total, eight amateur sporting events scheduled to take place in Greater Detroit over the next month have been canceled because of concerns related to the novel coronavirus, and the financial impact is expected to cost “in the $10 million range,” according to Detroit Sports Commission senior vice president Dave Beachnau.
