How hockey helped Michigan football sign Port Huron Northern's Braiden McGregor

On Wednesday morning inside Port Huron Northern's gymnasium, about 100 people, including family members, friends, teammates and a small herd of college football reporters, among others, flocked around Braiden McGregor as he signed his ceremonial national letter of intent to play for Michigan next school year.

The 6-foot-6, 260-pound senior is a composite four-star defensive end, according to 247 Sports, and the second-best recruit in the state, behind only Oak Park defensive tackle Justin Rogers.

Those accolades are incredibly impressive considering McGregor almost quit the sport entirely to focus on playing travel hockey in the eighth grade.
