John Beilein was devoted to the basics of basketball.
During his tenure as Michigan's coach, practices often started with "fundamentals, catching the ball with two hands." Players would re-learn how to pivot. They would focus on seemingly simple skills such as layups and dribbling.
In order to improve spin, players would use the 'Beilein ball,' a basketball with a thick line drawn perpendicular to the normal black lines.
