He was supposed to play for Harvard. Now he might put Michigan hockey over the top

There’s a quiet confidence about him.

During a video conference call, donning a dark blue Michigan polo, Matthew Beniers calmly answered questions with the poise of a 10-year NHL pro.

Except he’s not a 10-year pro. He’s an 18-year-old freshman forward about to play his first game for the Michigan Wolverines on Saturday; but you’d never know it.

“He looks like a veteran,” Michigan hockey coach Mel Pearson said. “He looks like a mature veteran who bought into playing good solid defense”

He was not supposed to play for the Wolverines.
