Players are recruited because of their demonstrated potential and coaches are hired because of their demonstrated ability to coach. While Greg Mattison was the Defensive Coordinator under Brady Hoke, statistically the defense was never particularly good and actually got worse every year. DJ Durkin gets hired and for the first half or more of the season the defense shined unlike at any time under the leadership of Mr. Mattison. Most of the players were the same as the last year or two of Mr Mattison's leadership.
